The mainstream media and the Democratic Party have found a gun-grabbing ally in the American Medical Association (AMA). The AMA made headlines this month when it endorsed a string of draconian gun control measures that could have been drafted (in fact, they probably were) with the help of liberal Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York.
The reason behind the AMA’s bizarre anti-gun pitch is, of course, “for the children.” The mainstream media holds up the AMA endorsement of gun control as irrefutable evidence that all of you gun owners out there are bad people, unworthy of living in a civilized society. But as usual, the media is only telling half of the story.
First, here is what the AMA is asking for in its “modest” call for gun control:
- Universal Gun Registration: People tend to forget that a federal gun registry of all privately-owned firearms is specifically against federal law. A universal registry has been banned for many years, specifically because of fears of how governments throughout history have used those registrations to go find the guns when they want to take them away.
- Banning Under-21 Sales & Ownership: We’ve covered this horrific measure here previously. Sure, you may be old enough to vote or to join the military, but to own a gun? No, you’re not mature enough for that in the eyes of the AMA.
- Banning and Confiscating “High Capacity Magazines”: Aside from the fact that the AMA wants this to happen, “high capacity magazines” are not defined in the proposal. Would those be 30-round magazines, 10-round magazines, 7-round magazines? What’s the number? The AMA left that proposal deliberately vague.
- Banning and Confiscating “Armor Piercing Bullets”: This is another deliberately vague proposal. Any rifle caliber larger than a .22 can pierce a law enforcement Kevlar vest, so this could effectively be interpreted as a ban on most hunting and sport ammunition in America.
- Banning All “Assault-Type Weapons”: Really? So now we’ve graduated from “assault weapons” to “assault-type weapons?” In addition to being deliberately vague, let’s add even more personal subjectivity into the mix! Perhaps the gun-grabbers will be completely open and honest one of these days and just come out and say it: They want to take away all semiautomatic firearms.
- Power to Report “Dangerous” Gun Owners to Authorities: The AMA wants to give doctors, family members, household members, intimate partners and others the power to appeal to a court to strip the gun rights away from anyone. This is similar to New York’s latest proposal to give public school teachers the authority to petition a court and take guns away from the families of rambunctious boys.
Doctors with the AMA are even encouraging Congress to declare gun violence, which has been declining in recent years, to be a “public health crisis.” This is akin to declaring gun ownership to be a disease.
One big problem with this is that when some people hear the American Medical Association’s appeal to its own authority, they lend it some credence. Here’s the part of the story that the media is not telling you.
The AMA has become so infested with politics that a majority of physicians have no interest in belonging to it any longer. In fact, the AMA only represents about 25 percent of all doctors in the United States. You may be concerned that your doctor is a gun-grabbing zealot, but there’s at least a 75-percent chance that he or she doesn’t belong to the AMA.
The group known as “Doctors for Responsible Gun Ownership” announced that many physicians are Second Amendment supporters and do not give the AMA’s political grandstanding any credence. Didn’t see that on the news, did you?
While the American Medical Association claims to represent all doctors in the United States, the reality is the opposite. Doctors have been leaving the AMA in droves ever since the organization came out in support of Obamacare. (As one example, the Direct Primary Care model of private practices has been growing at a rate of 25 percent per year since 2010, wherein doctors eliminate health insurance companies and Obamacare completely from their business model.)
Those are some facts you can share with anyone who tries to pull the “Doctors claim…” stunt in an argument about gun control. And on the off-chance that your doctor is a member of the AMA and starts asking you whether you have any firearms in your home, the solution is very simple. Lie to him.

A much larger percent of people die because of AMA mistakes then by guns ! The AMA should be cleaning it’s own house and fixing the problems rather then pointing fingers towards gun owners, you people have killed more people then my guns so take care of your problems first !!

Keep in mind that the AMA represents a very small percentage of physicians and most of those not in the actual practice of medicine. Most practicing physicians avoid becoming members of the AMA.

Kind of hypocritical since there are more deaths caused by medical doctor’s mistakes then there are deaths caused by humans using guns as weapons to kill another human . What the dolts on the rampage of trying to remove guns from private citizens to acquire the end gold of socialism is their game has been exposed . Only those that have their heads in the sand would believe anything a socialist might profess as a truism or a factual statement . AMA and the pharmaceutical corporations are hand in hand in the game of making huge sums of money . If both groups can keep the heat off themselves by pointing their fingers at some other politically aspired agenda , such as gun control they will do said action . Constitutionally speaking all gun restriction laws are illegal . Actually for a medical doctor to inquire about your ownership of guns is unethical . Medical doctors are to cure illnesses , patch up injuries and give advice on any given health concern . Medical doctors should not be involved just as professional athletes in political agendas at their places of work . Would drop a medical doctor if said doctor were to profess any political agenda as a medical condition , would think said doctor was a quack not worthy of the title of medical doctor .
I have yet to hear a single proposal by anyone that addresses the problem of felons with weapons. How do you get weapons from the bad guys.Laws are already on the books but ignored by criminals. Even in states with allegedly “tough laws” liberal judges subvert the laws with partial sentences,early releases, and parole boards assist in the travesty of justice. If evil doers knew committing a crime with a firearm would but them away for good, you would see things change.
Confiscation? Then be prepared for a civil war. The constitution and the second amendment shall not be infringed…ever. It is very clear, with no interpretation necessary. The point of the people bearing arms, is to guard against a tyrannical government. We are to be afforded the right to have weapons sufficient to mount such a response.
They can go to hell. Doctors kill a lot more people that guns do. Guns don’t kill people. Doctors kill people.
The AMA is nothing more than a bunch of college educated IDIOTS and shouldn’t be trying to say squat about anything to do with the public at large.
Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones. In 2006 my father, then 83, was in failing health. The pig valve put in his heart 14 years ago was worn out. He was given a choice- do nothing and die within a year, or replace the valve and probably last another 14 years of good health. He opted for surgery. On a Sunday, a team of three doctors replaced the valve. Now, this is “open heart” surgery where the sternum is split and the ribs are pushed open with a hydraulic jack to expose the heart and give the doctors free access for the surgery. It is about as “Major” as surgery gets. The operation went well, and they sent him for recovery. On Monday’s exam it was found that he was bleeding through his drainage tube. It was an amount that warranted another look. Monday afternoon they opened him up again and determined that the old muscle was too soft to hold stitches, so they trimmed the soft tissue back and restitched the valve. All looked well Tuesday morning, and they decided to remove the drainage tube, which was found to be “stuck”. On what, we never learned, but they opened him up the third time to remove the tube. Major open heart surgery three times in three days on a frail 83 year old man. He died that Saturday. One of the leading causes of death in this country is “medical mistakes”. As far as I am concerned, Larry, Curly and Moe got medical degrees somehow. And now they want to ban guns because they’re “too dangerous”. I know who should be banned instead.
Hospital medical errors are the third leading cause of death in the United States. That’s 700 people per day, not per year. Not hospital deaths by natural causes, but outright screwups perhaps with AMA members as the source. Perhaps if we removed the scalpels and such which are proving far more deadly than all guns combined things would get better? Rather than saying “scalpels kill people”, wouldn’t it be more accurate to say overworked, rushed, harassed, and tired workers are the problem and do something to help? Maybe cut down on the time-stress by attending fewer AMA meetings and less time lobbying. That would leave time for real medicine. BTW, most of the docotrs I know have no AMA plack on the wall. But the AMA doctors I do know are fine folks who do care for other people.
Then again, maybe our progressive friends *should* give up their guns so President Obama would have all the guns?
FOLLOW THE MONEY…WHERE AND WHO DOES THE AMA SUPPORT AND DONATE THEIR MONEY TO….IN ELECTIONS……..THE DEMOCRATS.
