How Bullet Proof are Army Helmets?

We all know that the United States has the most technologically advanced armed forces on the planet. Even at the entry level, our soldiers are outfitted with state-of-the-art weapons, tools and armor. That’s why it’s always fun to put that gear to the test and see just how well it does.

You’ve probably seen Kevlar tests before. It can range to barely stopping butter knives to making hummers impressively armored. It all depends on the weave, thickness and arrangement. But, when you’re looking into making headgear to protect the troops on the front line, options become limited pretty quickly.

While the technology has certainly improved over the last several decades, have you ever seen an army helmet stand up to direct gunfire? Do you know what rounds it can safely stop? Which rounds tear through it like wet tissue paper?

If you want a better view of the limit of modern body armor, this video is for you. You’ll see a standard-issue helmet go toe to toe with a range of popular and common rounds. What’s best is that this video comes with an interesting twist. We don’t want to spoil the surprise or the results, so go ahead and take a look.

And then, you can let us know which rounds surprised you the most. Were you able to predict which could penetrate the helmet?

Helmets were originally adopted to protect soldiers in WWI from shrapnel coming from artillery shells exploding overhead. They were not expected to protect the soldier from rifle fire. Rudyard Kiplings son was killed in 1916 by a head wound from artillery fire. Artillery, not rifle fire, causes the preponderance casualties in modern warfare. The Kevlar helmets do an exceptional job of providing protection from shrapnel and shell fragments.

The helmet is NOT bullet proof! Yes you can get “Lucky” but for the most part not built for this mainly just shrapnel,

First of all I would like to say terrific blog! I had a quick question which I’d like to
ask if you do not mind. I was curious to know how you center yourself and clear your mind prior to writing.

I have had trouble clearing my mind in getting my thoughts
out. I truly do enjoy writing but it just seems like
the first 10 to 15 minutes are usually lost simply just
trying to figure out how to begin. Any recommendations or tips?
    Thanks!
