The New Supreme Court Case You Need to Follow

Brace yourselves. A storm is coming. No, this isn’t about the record-cold weather hitting half the country. This is about the potential storm that could change gun laws in America in a significant way.

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a gun-control case with massive implications. They could protect one of our most fundamental rights, or they could sell our freedoms to the leftists.

The worst part is that it’s difficult to predict which will be the outcome. With so much riding on the decision, you need to learn about New York State Rifle and Pistol Association vs. the City of New York. It could prove to be one of the most consequential Supreme Court decisions of all time.

The Law

New York City passed a unique gun control law. It’s frequently called a travel ban, but in order to understand how it works, you first need to be familiar with NYC’s gun permitting regulations. While there are several that exist, the two that matter for this discussion are the so-called premises permits and carry permits.

As you might guess, the latter makes it legal for a citizen to carry a weapon (whether concealed or not depends on the permit). The premises permit is necessary to be able to legally keep a gun in your home or residence. Now, that’s already a violation of personal rights, but it’s not the topic of this new Supreme Court case.

The law in question dictates that premises permit holders cannot take their guns to a range outside of New York City. It literally negates the right to transport a firearm, under any conditions, outside of the city limits.

New York politicians justify the law by stating that without it, premises permit holders are de facto carry holders. If they’re allowed to transport their gun, then there’s no reason for a premises permit to exist. They might be onto something.

The Challenge

Thankfully, even in New York City, not everyone is a liberal moron. The travel ban has been under dispute for a couple of years now. Leading the charge is the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association. They’ve challenged the law all the way up to the federal district appeals court. There, the NYC law was upheld. Now, the Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case.

This is a big deal. The Supreme Court doesn’t often listen to 2nd Amendment arguments. In the last decade, only three cases come to mind. Overall, the Supreme Court will get the chance to decide if the 2nd Amendment guarantees the right to keep AND bear arms instead of the right to keep OR bear them.

What Happens Next

Unfortunately, the Supreme Court has a penchant for being unpredictable when it comes to gun law. The current bench of Justices is the most conservative we’ve seen in many decades, but there are no guarantees. That said, experts predict that its likely the law will be struck down. Part of the reason is found in the consequences of the two possible rulings.

If the NYC law is repealed, there won’t be much fallout. Legislators in the city will have to rethink their regulations, but it will have virtually no impact on how many gun owners, gun carriers and gun crimes persist within the city limits.

If, however, the Supreme Court upholds the law, the consequences will be immense. It will open a new door for liberal gun grabbers. Instead of focusing on preventing citizens from purchasing firearms, they’ll have free reign to attack the right to carry. It doesn’t matter how many guns are in your closet if it’s against the law for you to ever hold one in your hands.

The stakes are high, and uncertainty is afoot. This is absolutely a Supreme Court case that should be closely followed by every American citizen. If the Court goes against the 2nd Amendment, we will all need to bombard our Representatives and Senators. They will be the last line of defense against a slew of local and federal laws that will kill our defensive rights once and for all.

In any case, the fact that this dispute has even made it to the Supreme Court is terrifying. A federal district appeals court ruled that this law is acceptable. A city has the right to tell you that the Constitution doesn’t apply within their limits. That should terrify you. It should also remind you that the liberals are patient, enduring and scrupulous in their efforts. They want absolute control over your life, and they will never tire. Never forget that.
