Off-Duty Police Office and Mother of Two Shoots Down Gunman Robbing Families
Katia da Silva Sastre, 42, was the hero of a recent Mother’s Day event this past Saturday in Sao Paulo Brazil. The area is known for its violent, high crime rate and this past weekend was no surprise to many who frequent the area.
21-year-old Elivelton Neves Moreira thought he’d take advantage of the celebratory events of a school Mother’s Day get together by trying to rob a group of children and mothers who were in attendance. The group of mothers were waiting at the gates of a school where the celebration was to be held.
The assailant approached the group, armed with a gun, he first robbed an unarmed security guard of his wallet and mobile phone. Unfortunately for the assailant one of the members of the group waiting was Katia da Silva Sastre.
Katia was not only the mother of two young children but also a 20-year veteran of the police department who had gone to the school to attend the event with her seven-year-old daughter. While she was off-duty at the time, her instincts kicked in and she sprung to action when she saw the robber.
She stated, “I didn’t know if he was going to shoot the kids or the mothers or the security guard at the school door. I just thought about defending the moms, the children, my own life and my daughter’s.”
Sastre, who was carrying a concealed handgun in her purse pulled her firearm and fired three rounds into the robber’s chest before taking cover behind a vehicle close by. When the robber was struck he discharged two rounds from his weapon with one bullet ricocheting off the street and the other becoming jammed in his gun. No one was injured from the bullets.
She approached the assailant, who was down and kicked his weapon away from him. While he was alive at the scene, the assailant eventually succumbed to his wounds at the local hospital.
While Sastre does not view what she did as heroic and credits her training with being able to provide assistance for those who needed protection when the need came. Though she may not feel like a hero, she is being hailed as such by the community as well as Sao Paulo governor Marcio Franca who visited her at her station to convey his pride in her actions.
He took to twitter saying “I went earlier to the 4th BAEP in the east of Sao Paulo to honor a very special mother: Corporal Katia Sastre. Her courage and precision saved mothers and children, yesterday at the door of a school.”
Katia Sastre was formally commended for her actions in a ceremony on Sunday and not only received a commendation but also some flowers as they felt that she should be celebrated as a mother as well on Mother’s Day. While the department says that it is regrettable that the suspect died Sastre followed her police training and protected others from being harmed.
When asked to comment further about the events, Sastre said “I had to act quickly to end his aggression and prevent him from harming anyone. I reverted to the training I have received in the corporation.” She went on to state that she was grateful that she was at the right place at the right time to protect the mothers and their children and stop a criminal.
By stopping a criminal from causing even more damage, Sastre most likely prevented escalating violence from occurring. In the area of Sao Paulo, the murder rate is extremely high with every 53 of 100,000 people becoming victims. In the city, simple robberies can turn quickly to violent crimes such as murder.
The Sao Paulo police department reiterated the urgency of the situation and again praised Sastre’s actions to the press in their statement, “these criminals lose control easily. Katia didn’t know if he was going to react by shooting at the children, the moms or the head teacher who was at the school entrance. She just thought about defending the parents, the children, herself and her daughter.”
With the assailant stopped and the mothers and daughters being able to enjoy their celebration in safety the Sao Paulo area can rest a little easier thanks to their Mother’s Day hero.
