Democrat Gun Grabbers Aren’t as Ignorant as They Pretend

Some Democrats are just plain stupid. No one here is looking to defend the intellectual prowess of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. But, for every dimwitted millennial in Congress, there’s a seasoned veteran who has a deep understanding of the law and political processes. Plenty of these veterans are on the left, and assuming that they’re just stupid or ignorant is a big mistake.

At minimum, you have to learn at least a little bit about a topic to write successful legislation regulating it. When it comes to guns, the Democrats who draft bills to ban them probably know more about the industry than most of you reading this. Their misuse of terms and apparent ignorance is a feint. It’s a tactic to subtly add power to the gun bans they propose, and you need to understand exactly what they’re doing.

Automatic vs Semi-Automatic

Most lawmakers are lawyers. No matter how stupid their stances may be, they understand the linguistic difference between ‘auto’ and ‘semi-auto.’ You don’t have to apply the terms to firearms to give them meaning, and everyone knows the difference. No law-school educated legislator is honestly confusing these terms. They’re deliberately conflating them, and they’re doing it for two reasons.

The first is to garner support. There are plenty of gun-ignorant voters in the country, and Democrats can get sloppy with their language to convince this crowd that semi-automatic firearms need to be banned. They use the term ‘automatic,’ but the end-game plan is to ban all semi-auto weapons.

The second reason for this confusion is to write laws that ban more guns. Fully automatic firearms have been banned since the 1930s, and Democrats hope to piggyback off of this. If they can pass a sloppily written law, they could quite intentionally add a lot of semi-auto weapons to any new ban.

Bump Stocks

There are more people who are genuinely concerned by this term, but it’s hard to believe you could draft legislation against bump stocks without understanding what they really are. A Bump stock is not a device; it’s a technique. Some devices are manufactured to make the technique easier, but you can learn to use a belt to get a rapid-fire effect out of semi-automatic weapons.

The Democrats know this. The hope is that if banning specific devices doesn’t work, they can extend the ban to any weapon that can support a bump-stock technique. That means all semi-automatic rifles.

Loopholes

When Barack Obama criticized the gun-show loophole, he knew exactly what he was doing. This was not an honest mistake. It was a deliberate deception. You already know that there are no real loopholes to background checks. No gun can go from manufacturer to civilian without a background check or breaking the law. There are no loopholes or exceptions. Loopholes and the idea of universal background checks are both a giant lie. No rational American is against the idea of a father leaving a firearm to his son in his will.

The point of lying about loopholes and introducing universal background checks is to create a gun registration. It is absolutely the only way to keep track of civilian gun transfers. If Democrats are willing to weaponize the IRS against Republicans (and they still haven’t seen justice over this), then of course they would be willing to exploit a gun registration to go after their enemies.

Assault Weapons

Of course we have to talk about assault weapons. Second-Amendment supporters have done a decent job of destroying this misnomer, but it’s still around. Many members of Congress today were around for the assault weapon ban that existed in the 90s. They know fully well that the legislation was built entirely around cosmetics rather than functions.

They perpetuate this misunderstanding because they want a loose definition of assault weapons. If they can ban assault weapons without clearly defining them, then all they have to do is periodically update that definition in order to expand the already passed gun ban. It’s not the most clever idea, but if we let our guards down, it will work all the same.

There’s only one way to beat these dishonest tactics. We have to call them out at every turn. We have to stay tirelessly vigilant against the lazy language and cheap lies of the Democrats. We have to always explain these distinctions to the ignorant and explain why they’re so important when writing legislation. If we don’t, they can use any one of these tactics to establish a foothold and seize our weapons faster than any of us can react.
