Trump Just Beat Obama on Violent Crime

Trump has won big in several areas. The most obvious is the economy. He’s done the exact opposite of what the leftist claimed he would do, and it’s such an extreme win that most of them aren’t even trying to spin economic news against him anymore.

Less well-known is how big Trump is winning on crime rates. Let’s review the latest crime statistics and see if this is a story worth telling.

2017 FBI Crime Statistics

Before we get into politics, let’s look at the raw results. Overall, 2017 was a good year for America. There were a few extreme incidents that hurt the large averages, but even with two of the worst mass shootings in the entire history of the country, 2017 saw solid declines in every form of crime.

Violent crime fell by roughly 1 percent for the country while property crime dropped by 3.6 percent. Murders reduced by 1.85 percent. All of these numbers are compared to the final report for 2016.

There are a few interesting tidbits within the data. Baltimore had the largest murder rate for all major U.S. cities (typically referring to the 30 largest cities) at 56 murders per 100,000 residents. Chicago actually fell to fourth and cut its total number of murders by 112. That gives you an idea of just how bad the city was in 2016 that it could cut over a hundred murders and still be one of the most dangerous cities in the country.

Lastly, overall firearm crime dropped by 0.4 percent while murders with firearms decreased by 1.4 percent. This is most interesting since unarmed murders grew by four percent.

Obama’s Record

Trump’s first year clearly and soundly beat Obama’s last year by these numbers, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that Trump is beating Obama’s career. To say that, we need more context.

From 1990 to 2008, overall crime fell like a rock. In fact, the 2008 rates were less than one-half that of 1990. Similar trends can be seen for violent crime and murders. All three rates began to plateau between 2008 and 2010, and then they reversed.

Obama took almost 20 years of consistent, precipitous drops in crime and managed to turn that ship around. From 2013 through 2016, the nation saw all three crime rates rise faster than any other period in modern history. It gets worse.

The increased murder rate in the final four years of Obama’s tenure comes mostly from just a handful of cities. The worst of those were Baltimore, Chicago and D.C. If you remember, Black Lives Matters started getting national attention in 2013 and hit full stride in 2014. Obama endorsed them, and murder rates skyrocketed in cities where they were most active. It was so bad that it raised national averages even while murder rates in rural America continued to fall on decadal scales.

Trump’s Win

This might feel a little speculative, but Trump reversed a four-year trend in just one. All it took was for the federal government to show public support for law enforcement and let them do their jobs. Crime rates are already below 2015 levels. That’s a big turnaround, and preliminary data for 2018 shows that it’s only the beginning. While there are still a few months left, 2018 is on track to accelerate the decreases in crime rates.

So far, murder is 7.6 percent lower than last year. Violent crime and overall crime are also charting below 2017 levels. If the trends hold, 2018 will have the lowest crime rates in modern U.S. history. It’s just like the economy. Everything Trump told us was exactly right, and his policies have made swift improvements.

Then again, Trump doesn’t deserve all of the credit. Law enforcement across the country (except maybe in California) has redoubled efforts and really helped make safety a priority. On top of that, citizens have been more directly involved in their own security.

At the same time crime rates have been pushed to record lows, concealed carry participation has hit record highs. More citizens than ever are arming themselves and taking an active role in keeping America safe. The results speak for themselves.
