Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone on the East Coast who was hit by Hurricane Florence. We hope that each and every one of you is safe and able to rebuild. We also hope that local, state and federal officials will allow you to stay safe, by not restricting your constitutional right to keep and bear arms. We’re looking at you, Leland, North Carolina.
The City Council of Leland issued an emergency order as the hurricane closed in, which states that “the transportation or possession, or the sale or purchase of any dangerous weapon or substance, while off one’s premises, is prohibited.”
In other words, evacuate your homes and get to safety because a hurricane is coming, but leave your guns at home. For all of their insane gibberish about how President Trump sitting down for a meeting with Vladimir Putin is a “constitutional crisis,” the media never seems to think that an actual constitutional crisis like this is a problem.
We all remember the videos of law enforcement going door to door in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and tackling grandmothers to the floor to rip their dinky little .32 revolvers out of their hands. How is it possible that elected officials think they can get away with this?
When news of the unconstitutional gun ban became public, the Firearms Policy Coalition and Firearms Policy Foundation immediately sent a pre-litigation demand letter to the City of Leland. In essence, the letter states that if you (Leland) strip law-abiding gun owners of their gun rights, we will sue your pants off, assuming that you still have pants after the hurricane.
Right after the demand letter was sent, the City of Leland immediately amended the language of the emergency order, by adding this sentence to the end: “This prohibition and restriction does not apply to lawfully possessed firearms and ammunition.”
What a coincidence! See, they didn’t mean guns at all.
So, let’s see if we have this straight, Leland. You issued an emergency order banning the possession, transportation, sale or purchase of “dangerous weapons.” Then you clarified the order by saying it doesn’t apply to guns. What dangerous weapons did you have in mind? That flame thrower guitar from Mad Max? Are there a lot of those in Leland?
In all seriousness, Leland City Council, please be specific when answering this question. What “dangerous weapons” are you banning that are not firearms? We’re curious and we believe that the voters in the fair city of Leland would like to have an answer to that question as well.
Americans have seen what happens when the government declares the Second Amendment null and void after a hurricane, so we think we’ll pass on it this time. President Trump has assured the nation that emergency responders are ready to deal with Hurricane Flo and that this won’t be a repeat of Hurricane Katrina.
We all appreciate his optimism, but at the same time, does any gun owner really want to take their chances? (Spoiler alert: Don’t go to the Superdome.) Anything can happen after a hurricane, and that is the exact time when people should be responsibly armed. The police and military can’t be everywhere at once.
Looters always show up somewhere after a hurricane. If the city of Leland had not backed down, looters would have known the location of a city where a lot of gun owners left their guns at home. But gun grabbers never think these things through.
One final thing to note: Our rights are not dependent on our circumstances. The right to keep and bear arms is always in effect. It’s not dependent on weather-related events. You can’t suspend freedom of speech just because it’s dark outside, or freedom of the press because it’s raining.
“Sorry, Mr. Jones, we’re canceling your right to a fair trial because we’re expecting a foot of snow this weekend.” It doesn’t work that way and the American people won’t stand for it. We wish the politicians could get that through their thick skulls every time they think they have an opportunity to snatch our guns away from us.
For everyone affected by Hurricane Florence and its remnants, stay safe out there. You know what we mean.
P.S. We won’t tell anyone if you do decide to take your guitar flame thrower with you when evacuating.

Hurricaine Gun Grab sounds like what happens at a swap meet.If the person has a firearm legally owned by them.Leave the law abiding citizen alone and move on and go find some dangerous home looters!!!
Jan Jon, you are a little off base. This is not really a gun grab by the City Council, they figure the best way to stop looters is for the home owner to leave their guns at home. That way the gun, which we all know have minds of their own and can act at appropriate/inappropriate times, can protect the house. ;-p
If you read that amended line the key words are lawfully possessed. In other words if you are not supposed to have a weapon of any kind including a firearm then it is prohibited, so if you purchased the weapon legally and have a permit for it you are fine.
The way I read it is you can possess, sell or purchase the dangerous weapon in your home, whether legally owned or not. Just another poorly written attempt to violate an unalienable right; written out of emotions rather than logic.
That sounds like a big, “WHOOPS we might have made a MISTAKE!” It does sometimes seem that city officials have forgotten to read the U.S.Constitution and even their own state’s document. I live in Pa., occasionally a city here gets squirrely about guns but the state constitution reads, in Article 1, section 21; “The right of the citizens to bear arms in defense of themselves and the state shall not be questioned”. That means it isn’t open for discussion and notice they put citizens before the state which takes it out of the realm some kind of National Guard thing.

This country is full of morons and the sad part about it is that many of them are in a position to make and enforce some of the half baked ideas that they come up with. The Constitution of the United States trumps any local ordinance so just get over it and leave people alone.

It used to be quite legal to shoot looters after or during disasters of any sort. What happened to that? Don’t we have the right to protect our property from common thieves? Wouldn’t it make those politicians in effect, common thieves? I live in a place where earthquakes are common. The police have told us that in a disaster of any description, we need to be aware that we will be on our own for at least the first three to four days since emergency responders will probably be too busy to answer most calls. Our legally owned weapons are a part of that “being on your own” scenario. The First, Second and Fourth Amendments are our guarantee that we have the right to protect our property even from the “authorities”.

Many elected officials swear an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United states. I would bet most of those running and those elected , could not pass an exam on the Constitution. ….NEW AMMENDMENT…anyone running for elected office must first pass a test on the Constitution…..failure means you cannot be on the ballot.
