ABC News Skews Stats to Make Gun Owners Afraid of Police

Last week, Congressman Patrick Leahy grilled Besty DeVos trying to get her to say that she thinks its okay for a teenager to be able to go into a gun store and come out minutes later with, as he put it, an “AR-15 style gun and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.”

On ABC News, they underscored the video with the following caption; “Watch: Trump’s school safety commission won’t look at the role of guns in schools.”

What DeVos was trying to explain to the congressman was the fact that she and her team are looking at ways to make schools safer. But he was only trying to get her to say she thinks every kid under heaven should have whatever the left believes an AR-15 is. He repeated again and again, “I’m trying to phrase the question in such a way so that you should answer either ‘yes’ or ‘no.’”

Well, we’re very sorry, Congressman. But Betsy can answer any way she sees fit.

The article featuring that video goes on to report on a study out of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Northeastern University which claims to have found that people who live in states with the most guns are more likely to be involved in a fatal police shooting than people who live in states with fewer guns.

The high gun ownership states cited were; Alaska, Georgia, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma, South Carolina and West Virginia. The low gun ownership states cited were: Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York.

There are a number of things wrong with the study, and there are even more problems with the way the article presents it.

For one thing, it compares the total populations of 10 states to the total populations of five states. For another thing, the article says that the US has the highest rates of police shootings in the world. Even if that were true,
which it is not, it would show that police are preventing crime.

Of course, if you take the liberal media at its word, you do not believe police shootings are done overwhelmingly to stop and prevent crime. We know very well that the left wing media has done an amazing job at making it look like police are all racist maniacs just looking for a black man to shoot. Nothing could be further from the truth. The majority of people killed by police are white.

And, as we have said many times, more than 70% of all fatalities and injuries from shootings are the result of a police officer or armed citizen successfully using a gun to stop a would-be violent offender.

The article goes on to say that police shoot about 1,000 civilians each year. ABC admits that the study takes that fact from the Washington Post’s “Fatal Force Database.” However, because of what we already know about gun stats in the US, about 700 of those shootings will statistically be criminals attempting to commit a violent crime.

In the real world- where we and all of our families live- we call that winning. The problem with the left wing media is they are looking at gun violence from the wrong angle- that of the perpetrator. If a doped up criminal came into your home and you killed him with a Desert Eagle, the liberal media would report it as an act of gun violence and add your success at protecting your family to their list of grim statistics.

They double down on their sloppy use of stats saying, “During the three years studied, they calculated a total of 2,934 fatal police shootings, and found that 56 percent of those killed were armed with a gun. In all, a fatal shooting was 40 percent more likely to happen in states with more guns.”

What’s really crummy about that sentence is that they don’t tell you that 2,053 of those 2,900 deaths were the deaths of criminals committing crimes while armed with guns. It doesn’t matter how they want to spin it. There’s only one right way to interpret that: lawful gun ownership gives you a much higher chance of surviving a gunfight with a criminal.

Since we’re talking about police shootings, that means these are cases of cops stopping crimes. That’s far and away a different story to the one ABC news wants you to believe. They want you to believe that if you own a gun, the cops will come and kill you.
